It is now possible for tourist to go to Mogok. You need a special permit (we will got it for you), a licensed guide and to book an hotel in advance.
I am lucky to have been able to go to Mogok regulary during the last 10 years et to be graduated from FGA Londres - GEM -A with the diploma in gemmology, ((site FGA : http://www.gem-a.com/) so I now very very well this region.
Acces to Mogok :
Only by car from Mandalay or Pwin Oo Lwin :
- From Mandalay, it is a 7 hours drive
- From Pwin oo Lwin it is a 4 hours drive.
There is no mandatory road, and you can for instance, use Mandalay road to go to Mogok and Pwin Oo Lwin to leave Mogok.
The new road is better and faster, but sometimes could be closed for security reason.
Hotels at Mogok
During the last 10 years, the only choice was the Mogok hotel. Because tourists were not allowed to Mogok, the quality level of the Mogok hotel was going down and down... it was an experience. Now it is under renovation (cf below); the Golden Butterfly is again open, the new King bridge hotel is almost finished (january 2015) and two others hotels are under construction in Mogok.

Mogok hotel

This very old hotel that was the only hotel availlable during the last 14 years is now under renovation (light renovation). He has a post sovietic decadent style.... rooms are just average, bathrooms are very very limit (very simple needs a big renovation). So far this is the only hotel located down town, by the Mogok lake and it is almost half price of the golde Butterfly (which is really better).

Golden Butterfly hotel

This hotel was the best in Mogok and have been closed during the last 10 years.... Since December 2012 the hotel is under heavy renovation (almost totally finished july 2013). The Golden Butterfly is located 20 minutes from Mogok old icty (Mogok west) and Mogok east, on the slope of the forest. Anything view on Mogok valley, brand new rooms, very confortable, restaurant vwith a superb view.
Clearly the most charming hotel in Mogok (so far)

King bridge hotel

The King Bridge hotel is brand new (and not yet totally finished at January 2015 but the hotel accepts customers).
The hotel is located in Mogok, just before climbing to the Golden butterfly hotel and Kyapin valley (west mogok). It is more in the city than the GB hotel, but still less convenient than the Mogok hotel.
Rooms look very good and confortable, view on the valley is good, and the hotel will be well equiped (spa, swimming pool, restaurant, horse riding etc...). it is also going to be the most expensive hotel in Mogok.
